Correlation of fine needle aspiration and final histopathology in thyroid disease: a series of 702 patients managed in an endocrine surgical unit

چکیده
Introduction: Thyroid nodules are a common clinical entity found among the adult general population. With increasing use of imaging investigations like ultrasonography, there has been a significant rise in the detection of non-palpable thyroid nodules that require further evaluation and management. The routine use of FNAC has reduced the number of unnecessary surgical procedures for thyroid nodules. Taking a decision as to whether to operate on a thyroid nodule is dependent on accurate FNAC testing. This study describes the experience with FNAC in a consecutive series of patients with thyroid nodules who underwent thyroidectomy at a tertiary care hospital in the department of endocrine surgery. Patients and methods: Clinical and pathologic data of patients with thyroid nodules or diffuse goitre who were operated in a single endocrine surgical unit between January 2008 and December 2010 were prospectively collected and retrospectively reviewed. The anatomical lesion of the thyroid (solitary nodule, STN, multinodular goitre, MNG or diffuse

Diagnostic Accuracy of Frozen Section in Comparison With Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology in Thyroid Lesions – A Prospective Study
Background and Objectives: Thyroid gland because of its superficial location is amenable to direct physical examination. Clinical assessment of thyroid lesions by means of physical examination, thyroid scans and ultrasonography is not completely reliable. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is the most cost-effective, safe and an initial diagnostic test in the pre-operative evaluation of thy...

Introduction: This study was conducted at the Department of ear, nose, throat, head and neck surgery, Post Graduate Medical Institute Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar. The duration of the study was one year from June 17, 2009 to June 16, 2010. The sample size was 82 patients with solitary thyroid nodule, fulfilling the inclusion criteria. After taking detailed history, thorough examination, rele...
متن کاملDiagnostic Fine Needle Aspiration in a Case of Riedel’s Thyroiditis
In Riedel’s thyroiditis, a rare chronic inflammatory disease of thyroid gland, fine needle aspiration is usually non-diagnostic because most often only follicular cells are obtained and not the fibrous material characteristic of this type of thyroiditis. Therefore the diagnosis is often only established by histopathologic study of the surgically obtained biopsy. The illustrated case is a 46-yea...
متن کاملFine Needle Aspiration Cytology versus Fine Needle Capillary Sampling in Cytological Diagnosis of Thyroid Lesions
Background and Objectives: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an established out- patient procedure used in primary diagnosis of palpable thyroid lesions. A modified technique fine needle capillary sampling (FNCS) obviates the need of suction, is less painful, patient friendly and reported to overcome the problem of inadequate and bloody specimens. The aim of our study was to compare the...
متن کاملAssessment of the effectiveness of local anesthesia before thyroid fine needle biopsy considering the size of the nodule
Background: Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is usually used to distinguish the malignant and benign nodules. Applying a biopsy needle evokes a sense of fear and pain in the patients. Although some studies refute the usefulness of local anesthesia (LA) prior to fine needle aspiration biopsy, it is still debatable. This prospective cross-sectional study intended to evaluate the effect of LA ...
